An Opthamologist is an MD, a doctor of medicine specializing in ophthalmology. Ophthalmology is the art and science of eye medicine. Ophthalmologists specialize in the medical and surgical treatment of eye disorders, vision measurements for glasses (refraction errors), eye muscle exercises (orthoptics), and as well, the prevention of blindness.

Opthalmologists are medically trained surgical specialists. They are surgeons and may perform operations on patient's eyes. An Opthamologists may spend up to 7 years in residency training along with 4 years of undergraduate training and 4 years of medical training. Physicians are licensed by the state they work within.

Your eye surgeon must be a board certified-opthamologist and you'll want to ensure they have the training and expertise to assess your eyes and perform the specific operation that is appropriate for your eye disorder.

Corneal Transplant

The cornea is the clear part of eye in front of the iris and pupil. An unhealthy cornea can degrade your vision by scattering or distorting light and causing blurry vision or difficulty with glare.

The Cornea can become damaged and may need to be replaced. Fortunately, thousands of donors offer their corneas for use in transplantation. Corneal transplants are conducted as a way to protect the eye's inner structures, relieve pain, and improve the patient's vision. The process of corneal transplantation is quicker and less invasive than most people would imagine. Corneal transplantation is one of the most successful surgeries.

Corneal transplants are is a surgery performed by an ophthalmologist, or medical eye doctor. The surgery is often done on an outpatient basis at a hospital or an outpatient surgery center, allowing the patient to home following surgery. Learn more about Corneal transplants or Corneal transplantation and if your eye doctor has indicated that corneal transplantation surgery may be needed, contact the Boston Eye Group for a consultation. We have the expertise and modern assessment and surgical services to conduct a successful treatment and give the best vision possible.
